Tori removal is a fairly common condition for fitting lower (and less frequently, upper) dentures or braces. Different names for this medical surgery (mandibular tori removal) is pre-prosthetic and implant surgery.
When and if you ever have to wear a removable dental appliance and have a mandibular tori, chances are it will have to be removed at that time. You can not remove the mandibular Tori yourself at home.
Mandibular Tori reduction surgery reduces the size of the bony bumps (exostosis) that may occur in the premolar area of the mandible. Big lumps of bone tissue in the oral mandibular can interfere with the patient’s diet, speech, and overall life satisfaction – and removing these bulges can be a traumatic and difficult process. Typically, these bony growths should remain undisturbed, but there are cases where removal surgery becomes a clinical necessity.
Mandibular torus are typically clinical findings without any required treatment. Torus does not require treatment unless it becomes large to the point where it interferes with dental prosthesis or mouth functions. Large or rough lumps may require immediate removal due to their positioning, if they hinder language, cause speech disorders, block prosthetic implants, or cause poor oral hygiene around the lower back teeth / tongue.
At Bradburn Village Dentistry we use lasers to do this surgery instead of older methods. We found that laser surgery has certain advantages, such as the accuracy of the cut and the absence of vibrations and hand pressure during use. Lasers also have clinical benefits, such as less bacterial infection of the surgical area and increased levels of oral comfort. With laser surgery, the incision is cleaner, with less blood to block the surgeon’s field of vision which is a win-win for everyone.
Laser excision also has better patient acceptance compared to conventional techniques in removing the lower Tori. A more effective, less traumatic means of removing the tori results in higher patient acceptance, and the therapeutic procedure that could lead to greater life satisfaction and other benefits associated with the removal of these intrusive bony growths.
